The season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals presented the occasional challenges on Sunday morning, as the first measurable rain in over six months fell from the Southern California skies. Thankfully, the waterworks ceased by 11:00 a.m. or so, and the stunning blast of sunshine that followed helped NHRA's hard-working Safety Safari prepare the surface for some of the quickest racing in history. Once the jet driers had done their job, the all-important "manicure" was conducted, which includes applying fresh rubber to the surface (via a specially outfitted tractor), liquid traction compound administered by a speedy ATV, powdered traction compound (applied to the immediate starting line area), and more liquid traction compound, adeptly sprayed by Rick Stewart. As the whole operation wound down, virtually every crew chief on the planet began the customary track walking ritual to make their own assessments, develop their own tuning decisions, and figure out their ultimate choice of lanes (if their driver was qualified higher). The Safety Safari doesn't often get as much credit as it's due, but J.R. Todd, Gary Scelzi, and Greg Anderson can each tell you just how good the Pomona surface was. |
